Yates Center boys win two

YATES CENTER — 10-9 was such a good score to win by that Yates Center High’s Wildcats scratched it out twice in one night. Yates Center defeated visiting Burlington High baseball team Monday in Tri-Valley League play.
Down by three runs in the opener, Yates Center got a three-run home run from Jordan Hughes in the bottom of the seventh inning. That sent the game into extra innings.
Burlington scored a run in the top of the eighth to take a 9-8 lead. Dalton Smith doubled and scored on a double by Ben Burke. Brent Matile delivered a single to drive in the game-winning run.
Burke started the game on the mound for Yates Center but did not finish. He worked five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and six walks. Burke struck out seven.
Nick Leis got the win in relief, going three innings, surrendering five runs on four hits and two walks. Leis struck out one.
Matile had a two-run home run in the fifth and his single. Burke had two doubles and Smith had a double. Michael Bettega and Cody Green each had a single.
In the second game, there were four lead changes and it was tied twice. Yates Center trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Smith tied the game with a lead-off home run, then Burke and Matile drew walks. Bettega and Hughes had back-to-back doubles as Yates Center scored four runs.
Burlington challenged Yates Center again with a rally in the top of the seventh. Burlington scored twice before Yates Center closed the door for the 10-9 win.
Bettega got the win in relief, pitching two innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk plus struck out two. Smith was the Yates Center starter, going five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits. He struck out four.
Smith had a single and a home run. Bettega and Hughes each had two doubles and Burke doubled. Matile, Green and Leis had a single each.
