FREDONIA — Effectively attacking a tough zone defense launched Yates Center High’s Wildcat boys on a 22-9 run out of halftime.
The Wildcats trailed host Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets 26-22 at intermission. The third-quarter surge powered Yates Center to a 57-45 win.
“It was a very physical game and Fredonia played a solid zone defense against us,’ said Jeff Jones, Wildcat head coach.
“It took us some time to find the holes in it. We attacked it well coming out of the locker room.”
Leading 44-35, the Wildcats pulled the ball out and worked their half-court offense in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats cashed in on 11 of 13 free throw attempts in the final eight minutes.
The win pushed the Wildcats to 14-3 overall and 10-2 in Tri-Valley League play. It kept the Wildcats on pace with Burlington atop the TVL.
Brent Matile, who was hampered with early foul trouble, fired in 16 points for Yates Center. Michael Bettega netted 15 points and Jordan Hughes scored 12.
“We got solid play out of sophomore guards Devin Gregg and Dalton Smith in pressure situations. They came off the bench and played well for us,” Jones said.
Hayes Farwell was 7 of 10 at the line for the Yellowjackets on his way to 19 points. Kelby Applehans chipped in with 14 points.
Yates Center was 14 of 17 from the free-throw line for the game. Fredonia hit 12 of 22 foul shots.
In junior varsity play, Yates Center cruised to a 63-39 win. Gregg led the way with 20 points.
Yates Center travels to Neodesha Friday.
