Yates Center boys upend West Elk

HOWARD — Thursday night’s season finale between Yates Center High’s Wildcats and host West Elk High’s Patriots became an instant classic.
Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in Class 2A in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll. The Patriots were on a 16-game winning streak while the Wildcats had lost two tough Tri-Valley League games.
“A big win for us to go into the playoffs with momentum,” said Jeff Jones, Yates Center head coach, after the Wildcats pulled off a 51-50 win on the road.
Jacob Lenard hit a three-pointer to give Yates Center back the lead, 47-46, in the fourth quarter. Brent Matile and Jordan Hughes hit four straight free throws to push the lead to 51-48.
The Wildcats (15-5) held off the Patriots (17-3) in the final two minutes.
Hughes had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Lenard scored 13 points. Bryson Owens and Michael Bettega had 11 rebounds.
Sonny Lee scored 13 points for West Elk. Taylor Lowe and Kurt Roebuck had 12 points each.
