NEODESHA — Austin Knoblock and Blake Francis aren’t leading scorers for Yates Center High’s Wildcats. They are role players.
Tuesday night they played their role and beyond. Each one nailed a jumper from the elbow in the final two minutes of the Tr-i-Valley League game against Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks.
“Austin and Blake’s shots were key to us winning the game,” said Jason Weilert, Yates Center head coach, after the Wildcats came away with a 52-46 road win.
“Every win’s big, especially when it’s a league game. We looked tired and trailed at times in the first half.”
The teams were locked in 21-21 halftime score. Yates Center outscored Neodesha 14-6 to take the lead but the Bluestreaks came back on a 19-17 run in the fourth quarter.
The win pushed the Wildcats to 4-1 overall. They are 2-0 in TVL action and host Caney Valley Tuesday in league play.
Jacob Morrison had 15 points to lead the Wildcats. They got 12 points from Dalton Smith. Dylan Sicka added 11 and Donald Bennett scored 10.
Yates Center was 9 of 12 from the free-throw line. Neodesha hit 10 of 15 charity tries.
Brett Schurle netted 18 points. Randy Groth added 10.
Neodesha won the junior varsity game 40-23. Knoblock led the Wildcats with eight points.
