NEODESHA — A switch to a match-up zone defense helped Yates Center High’s girls collect their second Tri-Valley League win of the season Friday.
Yates Center’s Kassy Reynolds sank two free throws late in the game, stretching the Wildcat lead to four points, 43-39. They beat host Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks 43-41.
“Those two free throws were huge for us. Neodesha came down and scored with 10 seconds left,” said Leon Weber, Wildcat head coach.
“They fouled us quick and we missed two free throws but they couldn’t get a good look at the basket. They did put up two wild shots.”
Neodesha led 18-17 after the first quarter and it was 27-27 at halftime.
“We traded baskets, turnovers and missed foul shots with them all night,” Weber said.
“We got into foul trouble early using our man-to-man defense. We went to the match-up zone in the second quarter, fine tuned it in the second half.”
Reynolds had 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Wildcats. Taylor Heffern added 10 points.
Yates Center went 15 of 32 from the free-throw line.
Neodesha got 13 points from Belinda Rohling. The Bluestreaks went 12 of 28 from the line.
Yates Center (5-13) hosts Burlington Tuesday in the season finale.
