EUREKA — Eureka High’s Lady Tornadoes had too much firepower for Yates Center High’s Wildcats to handle Friday night.
The Wildcats lost their season opener 49-23 on the road in Tri-Valley League play. Eureka built a 34-11 halftime lead.
“I was pleased with our hustle and the girls being committed to what we want defensively,” said Abbie Collins, Yates Center’s first-year coach.
“We played man-to-man defense the whole game. We guarded them pretty well. They are just very good team and good shooters.”
Collins was not happy with an opening loss. She said the Wildcats never ran their offense correctly in the game.
Junior guard Jessica Hartwig led the Wildcats with nine points. Senior Kassy Reynolds and junior Autumn Douglas pulled down eight rebounds apiece.
Taylyn Schwartz, who hit three three-pointers, paced Eureka with 15 points. Eureka had nine players score in the game.
Yates Center (0-1) plays at home all next week in the annual Wildcat Winter Classic. The Wildcats play Monday against Altoona-Midway.
