YCHS boys win 1, lose 1

YATES CENTER — It was feast or famine for Yates Center High’s Wildcats Monday. The Wildcat baseball team (5-3) split a doubleheader with visiting West Elk High’s Patriots.
The Wildcats used a 12-hit attack to post a 9-3 win in the opener. Michael Bettega got the pitching win, allowing six hits, walking two and striking out 13.
Bettega also hit a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run double in the sixth. Devin Gregg also had a two-run double.
Brent Matile had three singles and Cody Green hit two singles. Jordan Hughes and Cassidy George each had a single and a double. Dalton Smith singled.
West Elk got the edge in the second game after a 3-3 tie in the second. The Patriots won 10-5.
Nick Leis and Corey Hedstrom pitched for Yates Center. They allowed 11 hits.
Bettega had a single and a double. Matile hit two singles. Hitting a single each were Smith, Gregg, Leis and Green.
“We had our chances. We left the bases loaded twice in the game,” said Leon Weber, Wildcat head coach.
The Wildcats play in Humboldt’s tournament Friday.
