YCHS boys drop semifinal decision

YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s boys found it difficult to keep up with the length and athletic ability of Erie High Thursday.
“We got good looks early, but we couldn’t get anything to drop,” Wildcat head coach Jason Weilert said. “And things kind of snowballed on us in the third quarter when we started getting tired.”
The Red Devils turned a nine-point halftime lead into an 18-point cushion, 43-25, by the end of the third quarter in a 57-38 win. The loss came in the semifinals of Yates Center’s Wildcat Winter Classic.
Yates Center (2-1) plays for third against Cherryvale, a 59-55 overtime loser to Sedan Thursday, at 6 p.m. Saturday in the east gymnasium.
“Erie’s a good team,” Weilert said. “They’re tall, athletic and very well-coached. They went to a zone early and did a good job on putting pressure on our outside shooters. They dictated what shots we were going to take and really set the tempo.”
Erie led 11-5 after one period and 22-12 by intermission.
The Wildcats were without the services of junior Paul Stockebrand, the team’s tallest player. Stockebrand suffered an injury in practice, Weilert said.
“We did a good job of blocking out, and a game like this is good for us in that we had guys who had to step up and get experience,” Weilert said. “Dalton Smith played extremely well. He played hard to the end, even when we were down 16, 18 points.”
Smith led the Wildcats with 16 points, followed by Jake Morrison with 10.
Erie’s Kaleb Tredway led the Red Devils with 24 points, followed by Tyler Klister with 12.
