Wildcats defeat the Tigers

MORAN — Momentum changed hands like a pendulum Tuesday evening.
Host Marmaton Valley High found itself down big early, back in front at halftime and down big again after three quarters to Lyndon High.
Trailing by 12, Wildcat head coach Jeremy Boldra addressed his team’s seven seniors.
“It just told them it was their game,” Boldra said. “And they put it on their shoulders.”
Marmaton Valley closed the game with a 23-5 run, including clutch shooting from senior Drew Stevenson in a 63-57 win.
The victory lifts the Wildcats’ record to 8-11. They will wrap up regular season play Thursday at Oswego. Class 2A substate action begins next week.
Marmaton Valley trailed by 10 points in the first quarter before rebounding to take an 18-17 lead after one quarter.
“It was a fast-paced game, and we’re not a team that pushes the ball all that much,” Boldra said. “But we were able to stay in front even though we were playing their game.”
The Wildcats led 30-28 before Lyndon took control in the third quarter. The Tigers converted Marmaton Valley miscues into a 24-point quarter, 12 of which came from Derek Banzhaf. By the time the quarter ended, Lyndon was on top 52-40.
Marmaton Valley slowly but surely cut into the lead. Stevenson’s three-pointer with about 3 minutes left on the clock gave the Wildcats a one-point lead. The sealed the win by hitting 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch to finish with 25 points.
Two other seniors, Robert McEwan and Garret Ericson, also reached double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
“I was very happy — very pleased — with how our seniors responded on Senior Night,” Boldra said.
Banzhaf led Lyndon with 19 points, followed by David Spencer with 14 and Dylan Filburn with 10.
