Wildcats, Cubs run at Girard

GIRARD — Yates Center High’s Dylan Sicka captured second place in the varsity boys race of the Girard High Invitational cross country meet Thursday. Sicka ran the 5K in 16 minutes, 63 seconds and took second to Brandon Craig of Lansing.
Humboldt High’s Cody Wright placed 13th in the varsity race, improving his time from a year ago by 20 seconds. He ran the distance in 18:48.
Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said the rest of his boys asked to move from the junior varsity race to the varsity race. “I like the fact that they are challenging themselves. That shows a lot of character and drive to get better.”
Humboldt’s Jacob Jones placed 30th in the varsity race at 21:24 and Nick Keazer was 35th in 22:12. Dylan Greve was 41st, 24:33, followed by Kile Martin in 42nd, 25:36, and Brett Heslop in 43rd, 30:57.
Raquel Hill ran 11th in the varsity girls’ 4K race. The Humboldt junior’s time was 18:02.
In the junior varsity girls race, Yates Center’s Cherokee Shaffer placed 10th in 15:22. Yates Center’s Paul Stockebrand won the junior varsity boys race in 11:55.
“We had good races by everyone,” said Kevin Barnes, Yates Center head coach. “The best news for the week is that we have two more boys out, Sam Aguirre and Tanner Sheldon, and one girls, Cheri Dyer. They are all freshmen.”
Humboldt’s Jackson Smith earned the eighth-place medal in the junior varsity race in 13:14. Ezra Bartlett took 15th in 14:06 with Chris Headley in 21st in 14:47 and Riley Herder placed 28th in 16:35.
