Wildcats, Cubs earn TVL track titles

YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s Donald Bennett, Dylan Sicka and Brae Adams claimed Tri Valley League track event championships in front of a home crowd Thursday.
The Yates Center High boys won two of the three relay championships. Humboldt High’s Cubs took the other relay title.
Yates Center’s boys placed third as a team with 87 points and Humboldt was fourth with 77 points at the league meet. Fredonia won the team title in the boys division with 135 points followed by Caney Valley with 109.
Adams defended her TVL discus championship with a throw of 112 feet, 81⁄2 inches. Haley Bedell placed fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 54.4 seconds.
That was all the scoring for Yates Center’s girls at Thursday’s meet. Burlington dominated with 177 points for the team championship and Eureka was second with 143 points.
Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs scored 18 points for sixth and Yates Center was seventh with 14 points.
Humboldt’s Raquel Hill finished second in the 1600-meter run in 5 minutes, 58.8 seconds. She took the silver medal in the 3200-meter run in 13:46.
The Lady Cub 4x800-meter relay team of Hill, Michaela Bartlett, Emily Durand and Darah Tinkler was fifth in 12:44.
“Our boys did a great job taking third as every one entered scored or medaled,” said Dan Berg, Yates Center head coach. “Brae continues a strong season in the discus.
“We’d like to thank all the help from the Yates Center schools staff along with the community members and our junior high hurdle hustlers for making this meet run smoothly. Without their help, this would have been impossible.”
Yates Center’s boys had two double TVL individual event champions Thursday. Bennett earned gold in the 110-meter high hurdles in personal-best 16.1 seconds, just edging out Humboldt’s Chris Winner, 16.2 seconds.
Bennett won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in another close race. Bennett was first in 41.7 seconds while Humboldt’s Scott Sollars placed second in 42.6. Winner was third in 44.6.
Sicka captured gold in the 1600-meter run in 4:52.1. Humboldt’s Andy Hill placed fourth in 5:01.38.
Sicka was the TVL 800-meter champion, winning the race in 2:09.9. Yates Center’s Austin Knobloch was sixth in 2:23.
Humboldt’s Sollars and Hill combined with Kevin Barker and Reece Criger to win the TVL championship in the 4x800-meter relay. The Cub foursome’s time was 9:06.3.
Winning the 4x100-meter relay championship was Yates Center’s team of Joe Tressler, Bennett, David VanHoose and Jacob Pennuto in 46.1 seconds. Humboldt’s team of Josh Jay, Nick Miller, Barker and Winner finished fifth in 48.4 seconds.
Yates Center put together a championship run in the 4x400-meter relay race. Tressler, Pennuto, Bennett and Sicka combined for a winning time of 3:40.3.
Humboldt’s team of Barker, Miller, Sollars and Winner was right on the Wildcats’ heels for second place. The Cubs ran the 4x400 race in 3:42.4.
In the 400-meter dash, Pennuto finished second in a personal-best 52.7 seconds. Yates Center’s VanHoose was fourth in 55.62 seconds and Humboldt’s Barker was fifth in 55.56.
Tressler took third in the 200-meter dash in 23.9 seconds. Humboldt’s Miller was fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.68 seconds.
Sicka placed third in the 3200-meter run in 10:4068 and Humboldt’s Hill was fifth in 11:26.42.
Hill finished third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5’6”.
Yates Center’s Brent Rice was fifth at 5’2”. Humboldt’s Sollars took the silver medal in the triple jump with a leap of 39’11⁄2”.
Humboldt’s Devin Onnen was third in the javelin with a throw of 146’7”. Onnen was fourth in the shot put at 38’6” with teammate Rusty Olson sixth at 35’111⁄2”.
Humboldt and Yates Center will competed next Friday in the Kansas Class 2A Regional Track Meet at Pleasanton.
The top four finsihers in each event qualify for the Kansas high school state meet, My 29-30.
