Wildcats no match for Hornets

CHETOPA — Marmaton Valley kicked off its 2009 campaign in fine fashion Friday, steamrolling its way to a 50-0 win over host Chetopa High.
The Wildcats were sparked by quarterback Ethan Ericson, who tossed five touchdown passes — to five different receivers — as the Marmaton Valley blew the game open with a 30-point second quarter.
“There were times we played very well, and it’s good to get a win,” Marmaton Valley head coach Dan Uhlrich said. “The score may not indicate it, but there are areas we need to improve on.”
Ericson’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Randall Kuns ended the game in the fourth quarter, via Kansas’ eight-man mercy rule.
Ericson started the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Lewis before rushing in a keeper from five yards away to push the Wildcat lead to 14-0.
Ericson connected with Logan Booth on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Then Kuns scored on a three-yard run. Ericson took to the air again, hitting Skyler Houk from three yards out. He capped his explosive half with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Kurtis LaRue, to put the lead at 44-0 at the break.
Ericson completed 8 of 14 passes for 198 yards and rushed six times for 63 yards. Kuns had 70 yards on two receptions. Booth had 55 yards on two receptions. Daylen Houk had 36 yards on two catches.
Shawn Storrer led the Wildcat defense with nine tackles, followed by Lewis, Justin Holeman and S. Houk with six stops each. LaRue pulled in a fumble recovery and interception and S. Houk recovered a fumble.
Marmaton Valley travels to Miami, Mo., next Friday.
