Wildcat boys fall to Hornets

CHETOPA — A dismal start put Marmaton Valley High’s boys in a hole they couldn’t escape Tuesday.
The Wildcats were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 29-8 at halftime of a 62-47 loss to host Chetopa High.
“I was in a state of disbelief for a while,” Wildcat head coach Jeremy Boldra said. “We couldn’t hit anything; we threw the ball away. We just didn’t do anything right. We couldn’t get a bucket.”
Add to that a decided advantage at the free throw line — the Hornets connected on 21 of 25 charities; Marmaton Valley 4 of 9 — and you have the makings of what Boldra called “a rough night.”
Chetopa led 14-0 after one period and closed the half with a 15-8 run to lead by 19.
“We played better in the second half, and we tried the press, but they were able break the press,” Boldra said. “We were able to get a few turnovers that way.”
Marmaton Valley outscored Chetopa 39-33 after the break, but were unable to threaten the lead, Boldra said.
Drew Stevenson connected on four three-pointers and 15 points overall for the Wildcats, while Garret Ericson added 10 points.
Steven Ahrens led the Hornets with 25 points, while Jerry Wilson connected on 10 of 11 free throws for 15 points.
Marmaton Valley, 7-10, travels to Pleasanton Friday.
