Wildcat, Eagle athletes claim TRL track titles

Marmaton Valley High’s track teams had four event champions Thursday at the 2009 Three Rivers League track meet. Uniontown High’s athletes captured 11 event championships.
Having a triple gold-medal performance is rare but to do it two years in a row in league competition is quite a feat.
Uniontown High’s Abbie Smith was a three-event champion at Thursday’s league track meet, hosted by Crest High School at Iola’s Riverside Park.
Smith repeated as the TRL long jump, 100-meter high hurdle and 300-meter intermediate hurdle champions. Smith powered to the high hurdle title in 17.19 seconds, with Marmaton Valley’s Kelsey Brantley in second at 19.3 and Caitlin Isaac, also of Marmaton Valley, fifth at 20.1.
Smith won the 300-meter hurdles in 54.12 seconds. Isaac was second in 59.92 seconds.
Smith led a 1-2-3-4 finish by Uniontown and Marmaton Valley in the long jump. She won it with a leap of 16 feet, 8 inches, with teammate Emily Aikins in second at 16’4”. Marmaton Valley's Mercedes Trollope was third at 14’41⁄4” and her teammate Lydia Lance landed fourth at 14’21⁄2”.
Uniontown had another triple gold-medal performance at the league meet. Ben Dixon won the long jump, then became the TRL dash man, winning the 100 meters in 11.74 seconds and the 200 meters in 24.06 seconds.
Marmaton Valley High’s Zach Louk and Kurtis LaRue claimed league championships. Louk won the 3200-meter run in 10 minutes, 53.08 seconds. LaRue won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 44.21 seconds.
Uniontown’s Emily Aikins won the 200-meter dash gold in 27.92 seconds.
Marmaton Valley’s Brantley is the TRL 800-meter run champion. She won the race in 2:49.01. Winning the triple jump championship was Marmaton Valley’s Trollope with a leap of 30’1”.
Uniontown’s Kate Spain-howard claimed TRL championships in the shot put and the discus. She won the shot with a throw of 36’ 21⁄2”. Teammate Aikins was fifth while Marmaton Valley’s Katie Holman was sixth at 27’ 31⁄4” and Rachel Boyd was seventh at 24’81⁄4”.
Spainhoward won the discus with a throw of 107’2”. Marmaton Valley’s Holman was sixth at 71’9”.
Marmaton Valley’s 4x100-meter relay team of Isaac, Lance, Trollope and Christian Hartman finished second in 1:00.9. Brantley was second in the 400-meter dash in 1:11.30, followed by Uniontown’s Ermel in third place.
Aikins ran second in the girls’ 100-meter dash in 13.59 seconds and Uniontown teammate Kelsey Mathis was seventh. Marmaton Valley’ Lance was eighth in 15.26 seconds.
Uniontown’s Jessica Schaaf was third in the 1600-meter run and fourth in the 3200-meter run.
In the girls’ javelin, Uniontown’s Ermel was second and Spainhoward was sixth. Marmaton Valley’s Melanie Henderson was seventh at 52’5”.
In the boys long jump, Uniontown’s Dixon out-jumped Marmaton Valley’s LaRue. Dixon won with a distance of 19’71⁄4” and La-Rue was second at 19 feet.
Uniontown’s David Shank and Colt Bartlet went 1-2 in the shot put. Shank won with a throw of 44’101⁄2”. The two Eagles were 1-3 in the discus as Shank won the title with a 142’4” throw.
Shank was second in the javelin. Marmaton Valley’s Josh Kale took fifth with a throw of 110’1”.
Marmaton Valley’s Louk finished second in the 1600-meter run in 4:58.23. He was sixth in the high jump, clearing 5’4”.
LaRue took third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.06 seconds. Marmaton Valley’s Jacob Conkling was seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.67 seconds.
Marmaton Valley’s 4x100-meter relay team of Skyler Houk, Conkling, Kale and LaRue took the bronze medal in the race. Their time was 49.44 seconds.
As far as team scores and Crest High results, those were not available by press time.
The Register did learn that the Crest girls won the team title with Oswego in second. Pleasanton boys won their division championship with Crest in second.
Marmaton Valley and Uniontown prepare for next Friday’s Class 2A regional track meet at Pleasanton. Crest will be in a Class 1A regional at Madison next Friday.
