Toland takes second in SEK

INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s Kent Toland appeared he might break through and avenge the losses he has had this season. But it didn’t happen.
Toland went up against Dan Porter, Independence High senior, for the Southeast Kansas League No. 1 singles championship Monday. The SEK teams completed the rain-delayed league tennis tournament at Independence.
Porter won 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 over Toland.
Toland finished at 23-3, with all three of his losses having come at the hands of Porter.
Both Toland, who is a junior, and Porter are in the Kansas Class 4A State Boys’ Tennis Tournament Friday and Saturday. The state tournament is in Salina.
