Titans lose tough one to Bulldogs

WAVERLY — It came down to big plays on offense and defense for Southern Coffey County High Friday.
“The difference was they made big plays, offensively and defensively,” Titan head coach John Chanley said, as host Waverly High fended off Southern Coffey County 20-14.
The Titans, trailing by six with 2 1/2 minutes left, got within the Waverly 20-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs.
Then, Southern Coffey County thought they had forced the Bulldogs to punt, but Waverly pulled out a bit of trickery — a fake punt and pass on fourth down — to secure enough yardage for the first down.
“They gambled and made the play,” Chanley said. “It was a heck of a game.”
The game was a see-saw affair with Waverly taking a 6-0 lead on a whopper of a play — a 79-yard run by Travis Sipe. Eight-man football fields, remember, are only 80 yards long.
The Titans evened the score at 6-6 midway through the second quarter when Ben Spencer found Chyler Ludolph on a four-yard touchdown pass.
But Waverly scored with 19 seconds left in the half on a four-yard run by Tanner Smith to retake the lead. Another Travis Sipe scoring run early in the fourth period put the Bulldogs on top 20-6.
Spencer connected with Aaron Ludolph on a 20-yard touchdown two minutes later for the final margin.
Spencer completed 16 of 26 passes for 143 yards, including six to C. Ludolph for 57 yards. Drew Parrish had 58 yards rushing and 37 yards receiving for the Titans.
Ethan Graham had 11 carries for 33 yards and interception on defense.
Travis Bryan had 10 tackles and Brent Houston had nine. Colin Kraft pulled in two interceptions for the Titans.
Southern Coffey County (1-1) hosts Flinthills High next Friday for the team’s home-opener.
