Southern Coffey County High’s Aaron Ludolph (42) goes up for a shot against a pair of Chetopa High defenders Friday in the Titans’ 57-33 victory.

While Southern Coffey County High was looking for answers on offense, the team’s defense was there to pick up the slack.
The Titans took control in the second half of Friday’s Class 1A regional matchup with Chetopa High.
Southern Coffey County allowed only 11 second-half points in a 57-33 win.
“You can’t complain about that defense,” Titan head coach Brandt Miller said. “I don’t think our intensity was the greatest, but we were in the right spots before we had to get there.”
The win secures the Titans (15-5) with a berth in today’s championship game, where they’ll take on the top-ranked team in the state, Crest High’s Lancers.
Regardless of today’s outcome, both of the finalists will advance to substate action. Tipoff is at 2:30 in the Allen County Community College gym.
“It’s going to be a challenge,” Miller said of today’s matchup with Crest. “You can’t guard them straight up. You just have to make adjustments as the game goes on. We’ll see how we match up.”
Friday’s semifinal game was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half as the Titans struggled to solve Chetopa’s zone.
“We were able to stand and look at it,” Miller said of the Hornets’ zone, “but we didn’t attack it.”
Southern Coffey County’s John Kraft scored a bucket, followed less than a minute later by a three-pointer by Justin Meyer as the Titans took a 5-2 lead. But Southern Coffey County scored only two points for the duration of the period.
The offense began to click in the second period. Six Titan players scored in the frame, while Southern Coffey County forged ahead 25-22.
The game turned with the Titans’ defense and rebounding in the third quarter.
“And I think they started pressing on defense, which opened up our offense a bit,” Miller said.
Trevor Smith’s only basket of the game gave the Titans’ a 35-25 advantage.
The Hornets were within eight before Meyer’s driving layup gave Southern Coffey County a 39-29 lead, part of a 22-6 run to end the game.
Meyer dropped in 20 points for the Titans. The Hornets were led by Steven Ahrens’ 12 points.
