Tigers thwart upset bid by Red Devils

Allen County Community College’s Red Devils pushed 17th-ranked Cowley County Community College Tigers to the brink. But it wasn’t enough.
At the end Saturday, the Tigers claimed a 72-67 win over host Allen County. They also snared a share of the Jayhawk Eastern Division title along with Coffeyville.
The Red Devils dropped to 8-10 in Jayhawk East play and 13-17 overall.
They will play at Jayhawk West No. 4 seeded Garden City Wednesday in the Region VI playoffs. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
“Offensive rebounding killed us in the second half. Cowley had seven offensive rebounds in the first half and ended up with 17,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC head coach.
“Cowley County had key shots in critical possessions. Tonight, they beat us. We didn’t beat ourselves. It was a good Jayhawk East game.”
The teams went at it toe-to-toe throughout the game. Allen County took a 33-32 lead with 3:13 left when Manny Richardson and Andra Bailey had back-to-back baskets.
The Tigers came right back with five straight points to lead 37-33. Allen County’s Micah Handley, who hit four threes, nailed one to make it 37-36 at halftime.
Anthony Clagett took on the Tigers for Allen County early in the second half. The freshman guard drove to the basket for scores or was fouled. One of the baskets put ACCC up 42-41 with 17:28 left.
Cowley County regained the lead at 46-42. Clagett hit free throws to make it 46-44. Matt Nelson scored to tie the game at 46-46 with 13:41 left.
The game was tied three more times before the Tigers took control, 60-54. Nelson and Handley each hit a three to get ACCC within four, 64-60, with 3:42 left.
The Tigers stayed out front.
Allen County got 12 points each from Handley, Clagett and Richardson. Nelson added 11 and Bailey had 10.
Cowley County was led by Jack Crowder and Robert Goff with 16 points each. Jawanza Poland added 15 and Dominique Lane had 13.
