A long regular season came to an end here Saturday night for Allen County Community College’s women.
After hanging with the visiting Cowley County Community College Tigers for a half, the Red Devils fell quickly in the second half. The Red Devils managed to score only 15 points in the final 20 minutes of the regular season.
Cowley County defeated Allen County 67-38. The loss dropped the Red Devils to 2-16 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play and 5-25 overall.
Allen County travels to Barton County Community College in Great Bend for the first round of the Region VI playoffs. The Red Devils play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the Jayhawk Western Division’s No. 1 seed.
“We played all right in the first half but got nothing accomplished in the second half,” said Andy Hamilton, ACCC head coach.
Samantha Aofia and Sumayyah Muhammad had back-to-back baskets to put Allen County up 4-3. Cowley County had a nine-point run to lead 10-4.
Angela Hogue hit a three-pointer for Allen County. Down 14-7, Aofia drilled a three and scored a field goal to get it back to two points.
Allen County kept fighting back from deficits to get within two or three points. Muhammad scored to make it 26-23 with 6:07 left in the first half.
The Tigers finished the first half by rattling off eight straight points. They led 34-23 at halftime.
Cowley County’s lead was 49-26 by the 13:50 mark of the second half. It was 52-30 when a technical was called on the Cowley County coach.
Aofia hit both free throws at the 9:59 mark. Cowley County outscored Allen County 33-15 in the second half.
Aofia scored 13 points. The Red Devils shot 32 percent, 15 of 47, from the field. They hit 6 of 7 from the free-throw line.
Muhammad had six points, eight rebounds and four assists. Allen County had 15 turnovers.
Elena Yankova fired in 24 points for the Tigers. Gabrielle Curtis added 14 points.
Cowley County shot 47 percent, 29 of 62, from the field. The Tigers hit 5 of 10 free throw attempts. They had 39 rebounds and six turnovers.
