PITTSBURG — Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats came within three strokes of qualifying as a team in Kansas Class 2A competition.
As it turned out Monday at the 2A regional on Pittsburg’s Crestwood Country Club, the Wildcats have two individuals going and Uniontown High’s Eagles have one golfer advancing to state competition.
Uniontown’s Justin Query qualified for the third straight year. It is his second as an individual. As a freshman he went as a member of the Eagle team.
The Eagle junior shot a 90 in Monday’s regional to earn a place at the state tournament.
“Justin had me worried as he shot a 47 on the front nine but calmed down for a 40 on the back nine,” said Jason Tourtillott, Eagle head coach. “I’m proud of the way he came back and finished strong rather than giving up.”
The top three teams advance to state, then the next five individuals who are not part of those teams qualify.
Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan won the tournament with a 315 followed by Pleassanton at 357 and Lyndon at 388.
Marmaton Valley had a four-man total of 391 for fourth place.
Wildcat seniors Derek George and Rob McEwan both carded 96s for the day. They tied for the fifth-place spot and both advance to the 2A state tournament. Both are making a second trip to the state.
The 2A state tournament is May 27 in Salina.
Other scores for Marmaton Valley were James Allison, 98; Drew Stevenson, 102; and Dalton Houk, 101. Other scores for Uniontown were Chance Hoener, 126; Rich Rhoades, 131.
Humboldt had two golfers in the regional. Jacob Jones shot a 133 and Willie Headley had a 182.
