Teams of area Class 4A and Class 2A schools have two or three more regular season games to play starting Friday.
Only games played by Tuesday will count in seedings for substate tournaments, March 2-7.
Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs take on Fort Scott High’s teams Friday in Southeast Kansas League play. But the games are important for substate positioning also since both schools are in same Class 4A substate.
Ottawa will host the substate with semifinal and final games March 5-7. The opening round games are played at the four higher seeded teams in each division.
Schools in the substate are Ottawa, Iola, Fort Scott, Paola, Louisburg, Anderson County, Osawatomie and Prairie View.
Following Tuesday’s action, Paola’s girls are 18-0 and ranked No. 1 in one poll and No. 2 in two others. Fort Scott is 15-3 followed by Louisburg and Ottawa, both at 13-4.
Those three teams are among the top 12 Class 4A teams in Kansas.
The Fillies are 8-9 and sixth in the standings with two games to go.
On the 4A boys side, Ottawa is sitting at 12-5 followed by Fort Scott at 11-7 and Osawatomie 10-7. None of the teams in the substate are ranked.
The Mustangs are 3-14 and are in the eighth spot.
Four area schools are in the Class 2A substate hosted by Northeast High School in Arma.
The semifinal and final games will be played in Arma, March 5-7.
Opening round games are played at the four higher seeded teams in each division.
Yates Center High’s boys are 14-3, sitting atop their division and looking like the possible No. 1 seed. The Wildcats are ranked 12th in the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital Journal polls but not ranked in the Kansas coaches’ poll.
Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan’s boys are 11-6 and ranked seventh in the coaches’ poll. Oswego is 11-5.
Uniontown’s boys are 8-9 followed by Marmaton Valley at 7-10 and Humboldt at 1-17. These three are sitting at 6-7-8 at this time.
In the girls’ 2A substate look, Pittsburg-Colgan is 14-2, ranked No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, depending on poll. Humboldt is sitting at 11-7 in the second-seed spot now and Oswego is 10-6.
Uniontown’s girls are 6-11 and Yates Center is 4-13, as is Northeast. Marmaton Valley is 0-17.
