HUMBOLDT — Iola Swim Team’s Seahorses competed in foreign waters for the first time this summer Wednesday at Humboldt.
Despite a problem with the Humboldt city pool water’s clarity, the Seahorses had a good night in the water. Noticeable paint erosion could be seen along the edge of the new zero-depth entry section of the pool.
Iola swim coach Muffy Fehr told the Register swimmers were having difficulty seeing underwater and finding the walls.
Humboldt City Administrator Larry Tucker told the Register this morning the Humboldt pool’s water is cloudy because of bad paint.
“When we did the upgrade of our swimming pool, we got some bad paint. After we filled the pool and the season started, the paint began to peel,” Tucker said.
“We decided to try to get through the summer season by vaccumning out the paint chips almost every day. Then we’ll drain the pool and have to sand blast it and repaint. If we tried to fix it when it started, we wouldn’t have had the pool for any swim meets.”
Tucker said the city withheld funds from the contractor, Carruthers Construction Company of Paola.
The Iola Swim Team goes to Independence next Wednesday. Iola is set to host Coffeyville July 20 in a makeup swim meet then the SEK League Championships are July 25 at Fort Scott.
