There’s no place like home. At least that was the feeling Thursday as Allen County Community College’s softball team got two wins on its home field.
Things went the Red Devils’ way in a crucial NJCAA Region VI Division II doubleheader. Brown Mackie came in winless and stayed that way.
In the closest of the two games, a 12-6 win for ACCC, the Red Devils had to rally from a 6-5 deficit. During the comeback, Allen County’s Whitney Sullivan got herself in and out of a “pickle.”
Brown Mackie had Sullivan in a rundown situation between first and second. An errant throw back to first base allowed Sullivan not only to advance to second but all the way to third. She scored in the inning.
Sullivan was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Jenna Wendt. Wendt went three innings and gave up five runs on one hit and three walks and four hit batters. She struck out two.
Sullivan worked four innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out five.
Allen County used nine hits to score seven runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. The Red Devils retired Brown Mackie in order in the seventh.
Autumn Lamle had a solo home run in the third inning for ACCC plus had two singles. Shawna Blakesley hit two doubles while Dana Stephenson and Kristina Popejoy each had a single and a double.
Sullivan, Chalice Schmollinger and Terra Woods had two singles each. Kate Gibson had a base hit.
In the second game, Allen County blazed a 9-0 win in five innings. Brianne Campbell was the winning pitcher allowing three hits and one walk.
Stephenson cranked out two singles and a triple and Sullivan had a single and a double. Jordan Talley had two singles. Blakesley doubled. Popejoy, Amy McAfee and Woods each had a single.
Allen County improved to 15-8 in regional play and 23-25 overall. The Red Devils host Pratt Saturday at 1 p.m.
It’s another Region VI doubleheader against the 12th-ranked team in NJCAA Division II. Pratt is 33-11 overall.
