Red Devil softball team sweeps the Red Ravens

COFFEYVILLE — Allen County Community College’s softball team opened Jayhawk Eastern Division play Tuesday.
They did it on the road and with a sweep of a doubleheader.
Allen County beat Coffeyville 4-0 and 6-4 to go 2-0 in conference play. The Red Devils moved to 4-8 overall.
Jenna Wendt and Whitney Sullivan combined on the mound to win the first game. Wendt started for ACCC, going three full innings before leaving in the bottom of the fourth.
Wendt allowed four hits, walked four and struck out two but did not yield a run. Sullivan came on in relief and worked four scoreless innings. She gave up four hits and struck out three.
The Red Devils scored a run in the first inning and one in the third. They added two in the seventh.
Kristina Popejoy and Jordan Talley each hit a single and a double. Shawna Blakesley had two singles. Sullivan and Dana Stephenson each had a single.
In the second game, Allen County’s Brianne Campbell worked around 10 Coffeyville hits to record the pitching victory. Allen County’s defense helped keep the Red Devils in front.
With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Campbell got Coffeyville’s Taylor Graham to fly out to Terra Woods in center field. Allen County won 6-4.
Campbell walked two and struck out two batters in the game.
The Red Devils opened the game with two runs in the first and added three in the second inning. They led 6-0 when Coffeyville scored in the bottom of the third.
Coffeyville plated two runs in the fifth and had one run in the seventh when Allen County closed the door.
Leading the hitting for Allen County were Popejoy with two singles and a double and Stephenson with three base hits. Talley and Woods had two singles each. Blakesley doubled.
Hitting a single each were Sullivan, Kate Gibson, Amy McAfee and Chalice Schmollinger.
The Red Devils host Cottey College for two games Thursday. Action begins at 2 p.m.
