Iola Middle School’s John Whitworth was alone on the curve running the 400-meter dash heat race. Whitworth won the event plus two other individual gold medals and anchored the record-breaking medley relay as the IMS seventh-grade boys won their division of Tuesday’s IMS Invitational track meet at Riverside Park.

Allison Cleaver hands the baton to Iola Middle School teammate Amber Gerdsen during a heat race of the seventh-grade girls’ 4x100-meter relay at Tuesday’s IMS Invitational track meet. Beside the IMS girls are the Osawatomie Junior High girls. There were 19 schools competing in the meet at Riverside Park.

On a great spring day, more than 1,000 middle school athletes descended on Iola’s Riverside Park. The 2009 IMS Invitational track meet Tuesday had a field of 19 teams competing in four divisions.
Meet records — all but one on the track — tumbled under perfect running conditions. There were 18 IMS Invitational records broken, one tied and one close call.
Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade boys were tied with Meadow View Junior High of Parsons at 67 points with just the medley relay race remaining. Anchored by John Whitworth, the Ponies not only won the race and the meet but broke a long-standing record.
Joining Whitworth were Michael Wilson, Tyler McIntosh and Adam Kauth as they posted a winning time in the medley relay of 1 minute, 58.88 seconds. The old meet standard was 2:03.2 set by Iola in 1986.
Whitworth also won three individual events — the long jump, the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Whitworth was just off the 400-meter record, winning in 59.83 seconds and Seibert of Meadow View holds the record at 59.43 (2007).
The IMS seventh-grade boys won with 77 points with Meadow View in second with 75 points. Crest was 16th with seven points, Humboldt 17th with four points.
The other seventh-grade boys’ record set was in the 4x200-meter relay race by Independence, 1:54.89, which was better than the 2007 mark of 1:57.1 by Coffeyville.
Chanute’s Royster Middle School won the seventh-grade girls team title with 126 points as Pittsburg was second with 116. Uniontown was a distant third with 40 points. Iola was 17th with three points.
There were six new meet records set in the seventh-grade girls’ division. Devin Cosper of Coffeyville had two. She won the 100-meter dash in 12.92 seconds as the old mark was 13.42 seconds by Cares of Parsons in 2005.
Cosper also won the 200-m dash in 28.38 seconds. That eclipsed the mark set in 2008 of 29.77 seconds by Backes of Chanute.
Chanute’s Regan Alyward ran the 75-meter hurdles in 13.91 seconds. The old mark was 14.23 seconds set by Garbarino of Anderson County in 2008.
Chanute’s 4x100-meter relay team won in 56.75 seconds knocking out another Chanute team of 2008, 59.13.
Pittsburg set the new standard for the 4x200-meter and the medley relays for seventh-grade girls. In the 4x200, Pittsburg won in 2:03.53, which is better that Ottawa’s 2:09.4 in 1986. In the medley, Pittsburg won in 2:13.94 which was better than Altoona’s 2:15.1 in 1991.
The only other gold-medal performance for Iola Middle School came in the eighth-grade boys’ high jump. Stephen McDonald cleared the bar at 5 feet, 4 inches and won the event.
Team honors went to Chanute with 87 points. Coffeyville was second with 84.5. Iola finished 12th with 18 points. Crest placed sixth with 34 and Humboldt tied for seventh with 27 points. Uniontown scored 26 for 10th.
Evan Hale of Chanute set the record for the eighth-grade boys’ 75-meter hurdles. Hale won the race in 11.34 seconds which was better than the 2003 mark of 11.42 seconds by Harmon of Southern Coffey County.
Coffeyville won all three relay races in record times. In the 4x100-meter race, the winning time was 49.02 seconds, in the 4x200-meter race it was 1:43.51 and the medley was won in 1:50.37. The old marks, respectively, were 49.93 by Chanute in 2008, 1:44.3 by Iola in 1986 and 1:53.12 by Anderson County in 2008.
Girard’s Hadyn Herlocker smashed the eighth-grade girls’ records in the 3200-meter and 1600-meter runs. She won the 3200 in 12:47.90 which destroyed the previous best, 13:31 by Voorhees of Altamont in 2008.
Herlocker won the 1600 in 6:01.29, breaking a 21-year-old mark of 6:03.2 by Trieber of Altamont, 1988. Girard teammate Hayden Bauer tied the meet mark in the 400-meter dash at 1:06.00. Laurence of Chanute ran the race in 1:06.00 in 1986.
The only field event record broken for the meet was in the eighth-grade girls’ shot put. Kurston Gilliland of Crest won on a throw of 37’7”. That broke Iola’s Jackie Rogers’ 2003 mark of 36’1”.
Pittsburg won the 4x200-meter relay in record time of 1:59.66. Yates Center had the old mark of 2:02.2 in 1988.
Pittsburg won the medley relay race in 2:05.35, setting a record. The old mark was 2:10.19 by Parsons in 2008.
With the win of the final race of the competition, Pittsburg took the eighth-grade girls’ team title with 87 points. Girard was second with 81.
Crest was 10th with 21 points and Humboldt was 13th with 10. Uniontown scored seven points for 14th and Iola had three points for 17th.
The IMS teams travel to Chanute next Tuesday then to Girard next Thursday.
