GIRARD — Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade boys broke a meet record and the eighth-grade boys were one second shy of setting a meet record.
Overall, Thursday was a good day for the IMS track teams competing in the Girard Junior High Invitational meet. The IMS seventh-grade boys won seven events on their way to another team championship for the season. They scored 127 points with Pittsburg in second at 111.
In the sprint medley relay races, the Pony seventh-grade foursome of Michael Wilson, Tyler McIntosh, Adam Kauth and John Whitworth won in a meet record time of 1 minute, 55.5 seconds. Iola’s eighth-grade boys’ medley relay team of Levi Ashmore, Tyler Clubine, Stephen McDonald and Jason Tidd claimed the gold medal in 1:59, a second away from breaking its division meet record.
Iola’s eighth-grade boys finished third as a team with 63 points. Pittsburg took the team title with 131 points and Frontenac was second at 112.
The IMS eighth-grade girls scored 20 points. Girard won the division with 148 points. Iola’s seventh-grade girls scored 15 points as Pittsburg dominated their division with 176 points.
The IMS teams have one more meet in the season. They go to Burlington Middle School’s Invitational next Friday. Events begin at 10 a.m.
