Playing at home in the Pony Stampede, Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade girls captured one of the two tournament titles up for grabs Saturday.
The Ponies defeated Pittsburg 20-3 to open the Stampede. Parsons defeated Pleasanton 35-26 to reach the championship game.
After falling behind 18-2, the Ponies came roaring back to claim a 42-39 win over Parsons. They trailed 25-16 at halftime and outscored Parsons 26-14 in the second half to win the title.
“The girls deserve a lot of credit. We came out flat and got down early but we didn’t hang our heads,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach.
“The girls came out after halftime and played very good basketball.”
Haley Slater fired in 19 points for Iola. Torrie Lewis added five while Emmalee Seabolt, Lexie Long and Jo Lohman each had four points. Kyra Moore and Emma Piazza scored two each and Shelby Reno had one point.
The Ponies rolled to an 8-2 halftime lead against Pittsburg. They poured in 12 points in the second half only allowing one point by Pittsburg.
Slater scored five and Seabolt had four points. Scoring two points each were Katie Shields. Long, Moore, Piazza and Morgan Wilson. Lewis added one.
Pleasanton beat Pittsburg 27-9 for third place.
In the other four-team tournament bracket Saturday. Columbus beat Coffeyville 39-25 for the championship while Independence defeated Chanute 21-20 for third place.
The round one scores were: Coffeyville 27, Independence 22; Columbus 43, Chanute 26.
Iola’s seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams host Columbus today at 4 o’clock.
