COFFEYVILLE — Iola Middle School’s wrestlers continued to improve as the season progresses with a solid showing at Coffeyville Saturday.
In the Roosevelt Middle School’s tournament, the Ponies posted wins in 14 of the 19 brackets they wrestled in. Iola had two wrestlers who had six matches in their brackets and one with five.
“For the most part, we wrestled well all day,” said Ron Schomaker, IMS wrestling coach. “Some of our kids went up against some really tough wrestlers. It was a pretty hard tournament.”
Eighth-grader John Whitworth placed first in his bracket. He pinned Martin of Joplin, Mo., and IMS teammate Travis Rieske. He defeated Wintjen of Coffeyville 5-0.
Rieske, also an eighth-grader, was fourth in the bracket. He went 2-2 as he defeated Ritter of Joplin 10-1 and West of Joplin 6-0. Rieske lost to Whitworth and was pinned by Hawkins of Caney Valley.
Michael Armstrong, eighth grade, claimed second in his bracket. He pinned Polk of Independence, beat Edwards of Parsons 11-0 and pinned Rivera of Joplin. Armstrong lost 4-0 to Watkins of Columbus.
Roger Maynard, eighth grade, and Trey Colborn, seventh grade, went 5-1 in their respective brackets and each finished third.
Maynard pinned Land of Eureka, Adrain and Seay, both of Joplin, and Vore of Caney Valley. He lost 9-7 to Fuhman of Parsons and defeated Roark of Columbus 7-6.
Colborn won by falls over Splechter of Independence, Selsor of Joplin, Burch of Pittsburg and White of Coffeyville. He lost 7-2 to Gibson of Joplin and decisioned Baughn of Chanute, 5-2.
Eighth-grader Bryce Misenhelter took fourth. His one win was an 8-5 decision over Dixon of Frontenac. He was pinned by VanMannen of Caney Valley and by Ballard of Joplin.
Alex Bauer, seventh grade, was pinned by Brown of Independence and pinned Martin of Joplin. Bauer lost in double overtime 4-3 to Plummer of Fredonia.
Cody Conner, eighth grade, went 3-2 as he pinned Vogt of Joplin, Chesneir of Independence and defeated teammate Kaleb Mock 10-7. He lost 17-2 to Bass of Columbus and was pinned by Wolverton of Chanute.
Mock, a seventh-grader, defeated Colvaro of Cherryvale 7-1. He was pinned by Fix of Parsons and lost to Conner.
Seventh-grader Wyatt Hines pinned Hamilton of Caney Valley and Bunch of Joplin. He was pinned by Greenfield of Coffeyville and Mauks of Joplin.
Derrick Weir, an eighth-grader, pinned Parker of Joplin and Emerson of Fredonia. He lost 15-0 to Foulk of Coffeyville and 14-0 to Brittain of Columbus.
Eighth-grader Tristan Sigfusson pinned Shaffer of Eureka and lost 5-2 to DeBord, Fredonia, and 14-1 to Wofe of Pittsburg.
Seventh-graders Jordan Long and Justin Peterson each went 1-2. Long defeated Williams of Fredonia 7-4 and was pinned by VanAnnette of Chanute and Brown of Pittsburg. Peterson pinned Huschka of Cherryvale then lost by pin twice to Capps of Pittsburg.
Eighth-grader Garrett Tomlinson and seventh-graders Brock Peters, Josh Elder, Colton Heffern and Jonathan Tidd were each 0-2 All lost by pins except Tidd, who lost by point decisions.
“We've got one week left. Hopefully, we’ll finish our season strong,” Schomaker said.
The Ponies finish the season next week with a trip to Parsons on Dec. 1 and Chanute on Dec. 3.
