Ponies edge Rockets in golf dual

Using a little body language, Iola Middle School’s Aaron Barclay tries to coax the golf ball he putted into the hole. It didn’t drop in the cup but Barclay went on to win the dual competition Wednesday at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Iola Middle School’s Aaron Barclay managed the wet Cedarbrook Golf Course better than any of his teammates or any golfers from Chanute’s Royster Middle School here Wednesday.
Barclay shot a 45 for first place in the nine-hole dual golf meet with Royster. Royster’s Denton Aikins was three shots back at 48 for second and Nick Pryor, also of Royster, shot a 51 for third.
Iola’s Hayden Wolf and Joseph Myrick each shot 58, tying for fourth. Jade King of Royster was sixth with a 59.
Weston Hines of Iola placed seventh with a 60. Dillon Wolverton and A.J. Larocca, both of Royster, shot 64 and 65, respectively to finish eighth and ninth. Iola’s John Hutton carded a 66 for 10th.
Also for Iola, Trey Wilson had a 69, April Steirwalt shot an 81 and Ben Myrick had an 87.
The Ponies won the dual with a team score of 221. Royster combined for a 222.
“We have not been able to practice much but played pretty well,” said Dennis Nevin, IMS golf coach. “We played well for our first meet. I think the younger players were nervous but after a hole or two they settled down,”
There were 20 golfers from Royster who competed in the dual.
Iola travels to Chanute on Monday then is back at Cedarbrook for the IMS Invitational next Wednesday.
