Iola Middle School’s Kaden Macha tackles Gage Kingery (25) of Chanute’s Royster Middle School during Thursday’s seventh-grade football game at Riverside Park.

In a game with a lot of defense played, Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade Ponies prevailed at home Thursday.
Two touchdown passes thrown by Pony quarterback Drew Faulhaber were the difference. The Ponies nailed down a 12-6 win over Chanute’s Royster Middle School Rockets.
Faulhaber had a 55-yard run to set up Iola’s first touchdown. Alex Bauer hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass. Iola’s Isaiah Grover caught a 20-yard scoring strike from Faulhaber.
Iola’s Jordan Long recovered a fumble. Grover had an interception to stop a Rocket drive at the end of the first half.
Kaden Macha had 33 yards on 14 carries. Trey Colborn rushed for 25 yards on eight carries.
“I thought our defense played real well,” said Travis Hermstein, IMS assistant coach. “For the most part, (the Rockets) weren’t able to move the ball against us for sustained drives.”
IMS head coach Tim Seibel said he was disappointed in the number of penalties Iola had “but am proud for the way we were able to come out with a victory.”
Iola goes to Independence next Thursday.
