Ponies escape with win

EDNA — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade Ponies edged Meadow View Middle School 30-28 Monday,
The Ponies led 14-6 at halftime.
It came down to two-point conversions. Iola was three for four attempts while denying Meadow View twice on four attempts.
Derrick Weir caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Tyler McIntosh and John Whitworth added the two-point conversion late in the first quarter.
Whitworth, who had 175 yards on 23 carries for the game, scored from three yards out in the second quarter. That gave Iola the lead back.
In the third quarter, Meadow View tied the game at 14-14. Iola got the lead back on a one-yard touchdown run by McIntosh and a two-point conversion pass from Whitworth to Jesse Zimmerman.
Whitworth’s 44-yard scoring run with six minutes left in the game and the two point conversion gave Iola a 10-point lead, 30-20. Meadow View scored with two minutes to go to make it a two-point game.
“Meadow View is a very good, very physical team,” said Marty Taylor, IMS eighth-grade coach. “We’re fortunate to get the win.”
“Eric Maxwell came on in the fourth quarter and played well. Bryce Misenhelter has made as big of an improvement from one week to the next as any kid I’ve had. He did a great job tonight.”
McIntosh had 53 yards rushing and was 5 of 9 passing for 73 yards. Misenhelter had 11 rushing yards and six yards on two catches. Zimmerman had 47 yards on two catches.
Iola (2-0) has a IMS jamboree Thursday at 6 p.m. in Riverside Park.
