Mustangs third in Buck Quincy Invitational

On one of the best days to play this spring, Iola High’s Mustangs played their home golf course well enough to claim third place in the 2009 IHS Buck Quincy Invitational Wednesday.
The Iola tournament was to have been played April 27 on the Allen County Country Club course but rain pushed the tournament back.
Fort Scott High’s Tigers mastered the course and won the tournament going away. The Tigers had a four-man total of 326. Back 16 shots was second-place Independence at 342.
The Mustangs combined for a four-man total of 348. That was good enough to claim the third-place team trophy.
Yates Center High’s Wildcats came in fourth at 371. Chanute was fifth with a 377 followed by Burlington 383, Iola No. 2 at 404, Parsons at 437 and Labette County at 465. Humboldt High’s Cubs had only three golfers competing so did not have a team score.
Only two golfers fired under 80 for the 18-hole event. Paul Norris of Fort Scott powered around the Allen County Country Club course for a 76 . It is a par-72 course.
Second place went to Cole Murrin of Fort Scott with a 79. The Tigers landed two more in the top-10 medalists spots. Nolan Stark, 84, was fifth and Evan Heiser, 87, was eighth.
The Mustangs had three players earn individual medals. Seniors Bryce Burris and Chase Ellis both carded 86s to finish sixth and seventh respectively. Burris had rounds of 43 and 43 while C. Ellis shot rounds of 42 and 44.
Freshman Doug Stewart shot an 87 (44-43) for 10th place. Also carding an 87 was Yates Center’s Paul Stockebrand (42-45) for ninth.
Iola’s Alec Peterson finished 14th with an 89 (44-45) and Austin Ellis was 21st with a 92 (44-48). The other member of the Iola varsity team was Chris Harrington, who had a 99 (47-52).
Playing for the Iola No. 2 team, Jarrett Mosbrucker shot a 98 (49-49) and Sam Shallah had a 100 (47-53). Other scores for the team were Nick Jacobs 101 (48-53), Kris Collins 103 (57-46), Rocky Smith 103 (48-56), and Zach Crawford 116 (56-60). Lee Berg played and had a 132 (63-69).
For Yates Center, Jake Morrison shot a 90 (43-47), Drew Stuber had a 96 (45-51) and Jacob Lenard had a 98 (47-51). Dylan Bauman finished at 140 (76-64). Blake Francis competed but did not have a final score.
Humboldt High’s Jacob Jones shot a 135 (72-63). Also playing but did not recording a final score were Willey Headley and Austin Haar.
Iola’s Mustangs are slated to play in Saturday’s Anderson County High Invitational in Garnett. They have two Southeast Kansas League designated tournaments next week — Monday at Chanute and Wednesday at Coffeyville.
