Iola High’s sophomore Devin Culler comes out with a takedown for two points on this move against Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jarod Avery. Culler defeated Avery 7-3 in Thursday’s home matches.

Winning 15 of 19 varsity matches, Iola High’s Mustangs set a solid foundation of wrestling at home.
The Mustang wrestling program, just two years old, held its first varsity meet Thursday. No team scores were kept in the triple dual meet with Erie, Cherryvale and Jayhawk-Linn.
“Each team had too many open spots so we just wrestled individual matches, trying to get kids as much mat time as possible,” said Ron Schomaker, Iola High head wrestling coach.
“It was nice having our first home competition. I think the guys were excited.”
Iola’s first varsity match at home was won by freshman Stephen McDonald. McDonald, the Mustangs’ 189-pound wrestler, pinned Iannis Wagner of Cherryvale in 1 minute, 18 seconds.
There was a “revenge” match among the 19 contested for Iola, plus one match that went back and forth with a combined 48 points scored. Two Mustang wrestlers were 3-0 on the night and several went 2-0.
Iola had two freshman wrestlers notch their first varsity win. A sophomore got his second victory of the season.
Iola fans in the stands also saw six exhibition matches between Mustang wrestlers. While Iola was wrestling one team, the other two teams were wrestling on a second mat.
“We wrestled extremely hard and had some very competitive matches,” Schomaker said. “We won some matches that I wasn’t sure we’d win.”
The Mustangs went 7-0 against Cherryvale High’s Chargers.
Freshman Chase Roett-gen pinned Gavin Thorenson in 36 seconds at 160 pounds. Junior Lee Berg took Dylan Zillifro down and pinned him in 47 seconds in their 135-pound match.
Iola’s Marcus Sullivan, a junior at 160 pounds, was next, pinning Curtis Hodges in 24 seconds. Junior Chris Lynn, Iola’s 285-pounder, followed with a pin of Cherryvale’s Chad Stanford in 34 seconds.
McDonald was back on the mat against Cherryvale’s Billy Mercereau in another 189-pound match. McDonald recorded another pin in 1:45.
Freshman Justin Baker pinned Thorenson in 55 seconds in a 160-pound bout.
The Mustangs took on Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks and went 4-1.
At 130 pounds, Jayhawk-Linn’s Mason Craig pinned Iola sophomore Brent Clark in 4:42 of the six-minute match. Berg won the 135-pound match with an 11-1 decision over Tyler Jenkins.
Then came the revenge match at 152 pounds. Iola’s Culler and Jayhawk-Linn’s Jarod Avery met in last Saturday’s Anderson County High Invitational. Avery escaped with an 11-7 win in the third-place match. Culler had Avery in a pinning hold when time ran out.
Culler “wasn’t going to lose” to Avery again. He was up 5-1 by the end of the first period. Going into the third period, Culler was ahead 5-3 and both wrestlers were standing up.
A takedown by Avery would tie the match. A takedown by Culler could seal the match for him. Culler got the takedown and won 7-3.
Sullivan came from behind and pinned Jayhawk-Linn’s Quincy Hodges in the second period at 160. Lynn pinned Eli Walrod in 28 seconds for the 285-pound match.
Next for the Mustangs was the Red Devils of Erie High School.
Freshman Joe Myrick opened with a point-marathon match against Chris Bohrer at 140. After both wrestlers had each other in pinning positions but unable to finish, Bohrer won the match 27-21.
At 152, Iola sophomore Zack Vaughn took on Chris Hoagland. Vaughn was in front by points when on a third technical violation by Hoagland. The match was stopped. Vaughn won by disqualification of Hoag-land.
Also at 152, Culler dominated Joe Sexton for a 13-0 victory.
Wrestling up a weight class, McDonald faced Erie’s 215-pounder, Taylor Cole. McDonald came off the mat with a 9-5 win.
At heavyweight, Lynn pinned Erie’s Spencer Gatewood in 31 seconds. Myrick came back out at 140 and was pinned by Erie’s Danny Yarnell in 1:13.
Kody Mullins, a freshman, was pinned by Erie’s Hoagland in a 152-pound match.
“We’ve made a lot of progress and hopefully we’ll continue to do so,” Schomaker said.
In exhibition matches, Denton Christian defeated Drew Shepherd 13-11 at 171 pounds; Zeph Larney pinned Jason Tidd in 3:24 at 130 pounds; Roettgen defeated Mullins 5-4 at 160; Vaughn pinned Baker in 2:50 at 160; Shepherd pinned Zach Crawford in 4:27 at 171; Christian pinned Crawford in 2:57 at 171.
Iola is sending wrestlers to Saturday’s Cherryvale High’s Junior Varsity Invitational. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
Varsity action picks back up Jan. 7 with Southeast Kansas League matches at Pittsburg with Fort Scott. Iola will host a SEK double dual with Coffeyville and Independence on Feb. 11.
