This is the boys’ 4x800-meter relay race — that’s right, a relay race. At Friday’s Iola High quadrangular track meet, all runners were put in the race carrying batons for two laps. Individual times were added for designated teams. Iola’s Seth Browning leads this group followed by teammates Joel Tidd, Ryan Weir and Aaron Cheung. Also seen in the race is Humboldt High’s Andy Hill.

Iola High’s Brittney Jacobs goes airborn in a long jump attempt at Friday’s IHS track meet. Jacobs had trouble in long jump but bounced back to win the triple jump event.

What started out as a makeup meet for two teams ended up as a quadrangular track meet hosted by Iola High School Friday at Riverside Park.
Iola, Chanute, Humboldt and Nevada, Mo., combined for the IHS Bailout Stimulus Relays. The only awards given out to athletes in the meet were Tootsie Roll Pops to anyone running in the field-event relay races.
“It was just a way to get competition for varsity and some junior varsity athletes for these teams. Chanute and Iola lost out on the K.T. Woodman Relays at Wichita, and Humboldt lost a meet last week. Nevada sent some over after losing out at the Paola meet,” said Marvin Smith, IHS track coach.
“We’re really looking at keeping this date to put together a home meet every year.”
No scoring was kept for events or teams.
Iola’s boys won nine events. Darin Hutton won both the discus and the shot put events. Iola went 1-2-3-5 in the discus.
Keagan Luttrell won the 100-meter dash and Joel Tidd won the 200-meter dash. Seth Browning, who led the 4x800-meter relay race, won the 400-meter dash.
Smith said it was decided to run the 4x800-meter relay race a little different “to make it more competitive.” All runners, boys and girls, were put in the race carrying batons for two laps. Individual times were added for designated teams.
Iola won the 4x100, the 4x400 and the 4x800 relay races.
Abby Works won the girls’ 800-meter run for Iola. Jamie Spears, Works, Suzanne Wood and Jennica Rausch ran for the 4x800. Molly Maxwell won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
Susan Loving took first in the discus and second in the shot put events. Brittney Jacobs claimed the top spot in the triple jump.
Next up for Iola and Humboldt is competition in the Fredonia High Relays Friday in Fredonia.
