Mustang freshmen lose to the Bulldogs

Iola High’s freshmen finally got on the football field as a team Thursday night at home. Anderson County High’s Bulldog freshmen held on for a 12-6 win.
With all the freshmen in the lineup plus a few sophomores, the Mustangs battled the Bulldogs to a 6-6 halftime tie. But the visitors from Garnett played ball control in the second half.
Anderson County scored what proved to be the winning touchdown with 1:58 left in the third quarter. Eric Tastove had a 20-yard run to the end zone. Cale Hedges scored from six yards out in the first quarter for the Bulldogs.
Iola mounted a scoring drive in the second quarter. Stephen McDonald did most of the work up the middle, running for 24 yards on the drive.
Quarterback Zeph Larney dived into the end zone from one-yard out with 2:09 left. The two-point conversion failed leaving it tied.
McDonald led the Mustangs with 33 yards on seven carries. Tyler Clubine had 13 yards on 14 carries and Larney had one yard on four carries.
Eric Heffern caught the only completed pass of the night for Iola for 25 yards.
Leading the Iola defense was McDonald with six solo tackles and nine assisted tackles and Devon Burton with four solo stops, two assisted tackles and a fumble recovery. Eli Grover recovered a fumble and had four unassisted tackles.
Clubine had one solo stop and five assisted tackles and Caine Duran had one solo tackle and three assisted. Joseph Myrick had three assisted tackles.
Kody Mullins and Denton Christian each had one solo stop and two assisted tackles while Levi Ashmore had one solo and one assist. Larney had one unassisted tackle. Joseph VanRiette had two assisted tackles and Zach Crawford had one assisted tackle.
