CHERRYVALE — Iola High’s Mustangs competed in Cherryvale High’s Junior Varsity Invitational Saturday.
Four Mustangs came away with first place finishes in their weight brackets. Iola had one second place finish and one third place finish.
“We have made some progress with our younger guys,” said Ron Schomaker, IHS head wrestling coach.
“They’re starting to wrestle deeper into matches and pick up on some of the things that we’ve been drilling.”
Joe Myrick went 4-0 in the 145-pound weight class. He pinned Bohrer of Erie, Cullen of Fort Scott and Kingerly of Fredonia. He defeated Kelly of Labette 19-4.
In the 152-pound bracket, Kody Mullins pinned Parker of Burlington on his way to first place. He lost 16-0 to Cheatham of Cherryvale and was pinned by Vogges of Erie.
Iola teammates Zack Vaughn and Justin Baker were in another 152-pound class. Vaughn took third as he won three straight matches after losing by pins to Figgins of Fredonia and Hodges of Cherryvale.
Vaughn beat Baker 17-1 then pinned Thorenson of Cherryvale and Mast of Burlington. Baker went 1-4 with his win a 18-1 decision over Thorenson of Cherryvale. He was pinned by Vaughn, Figgins and Hodges.
Jason Tidd went 1-4 in the 130-pound class. He beat Durosette of Fort Scott 11-7. Tidd was pinned by Lahey of Erie and Slater of Labette County. Zillifro of Cherryvale defeated Tidd 15-10.
At 160-pounds, Iola’s Chase Roettgen was first with a 2-3 mark in his bracket. He lost to Mast of Burlington 6-5 and to Hodges of Cherryvale 14-3. He was pinned by Higgins of Fredonia. Roettgen pin-ned Thorenson of Cherryvale and Lovett-Kane of Erie.
In another 160-pound bracket, Ty Miller beat Caudell of Burlington 12-3, then was pinned by Cook of Cherryvale, Grant of La-bette County, Gardner of Independence and Sexton of Erie.
Drew Shepherd and Zach Crawford were in the same 171-pound bracket. Shepherd was second with his only loss to Norris of Labette County by a fall.
Shepherd pinned Pinto of Burlington and Crawford. He beat Jonghoon of Fredonia 16-0. Crawford was pinned by Shepherd and Norris He lost 3-2 to Jonghoon and was pinned by Jonghoon.
Stephen McDonald went 4-1 to take first in the 189-pound division. He pinned Beyer of Burlington, Wagner of Cherryvale, Hitt of Independence and Merceeau of Cherryvale. Haviland of Erie pinned McDonald.
“We have a pretty tough SEK (Southeast Kansas League) schedule after Christmas, so hopefully, we’ll step it up another level,” Schomaker said.
Iola’s wrestlers open SEK action at Pittsburg with Fort Scott Jan. 7. There will be varsity and junior varsity matches contested.
On Jan. 9, the varsity will compete in the Burlington Invitational. The jayvee is in Independence.
