Iola High freshman Tyler Clubine ran the ball for 77 yards in Iola’s 20-8 win over Osawatomie Tuesday.

“We wanted to run the football. And I’d say our kids established that tonight,” said Mike DeLange, Iola High assistant coach, after a 51-14 junior varsity win over Osawatomie Tuesday at home.
Drew Walden rushed for 342 yards on 32 carries and scored six touchdowns for the Mustang junior varsity. Walden also threw for one touchdown, a 51-yard pass to Clint Heffern in the second quarter.
The Mustangs led 32-6 at halftime. Walden had a nine-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, then a 65-yard punt return. Christian Kauth kicked the extra points.
Osawatomie’s Daniel Dorsett had a 30-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
That was followed by Kauth hooking up with Corey Taylor on a 36-yard scoring pass play. The Mustangs got a four-yard touchdown run from Walden then the Heffern score in the second quarter.
Walden finished a scoring drive in the third period by going in from two yards out. Walden had touchdown runs of four yards and 20 yards in the fourth quarter. Kauth kicked an extra point.
Kauth rushed for 84 yards on 14 carries and was 4 of 8 for 41 yards passing. Heffern caught three passes for 55 yards.
Defensively, Drew Shepherd led the Mustangs with four unassisted tackles, three assisted tackles and a fumble recovery. Walden had two quarterback sacks, two solo stops and four assisted tackles.
Clint Heffern had two solo stops, three assists and an interception. Kyle Heffern had an interception, one unassisted tackle and four assisted. Stephen McDonald had one solo tackle and four assists while Carlin Turner had two solo stops and three assists. Devin Culler had five assisted tackles.
In a two-quarter contest, Iola’s freshmen beat Osawatomie 20-8 Tuesday.
Jason Tidd made a seven-yard touchdown reception from Zeph Larney in the first quarter. Tyler Clubine ran in the two-point conversion.
Larney had a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Clubine, who rushed for 77 yards on 15 carries, scored from eight yards out.
Osawatomie avoided the shutout when Austin Chisman threw a pass to Dylan Stewart and the scoring play covered 65 yards. The Trojans tacked on the two-point conversion.
