Mustang JV collects medals at own meet

Iola High’s Ralph Shafer finished fifth in the javelin at the IHS Junior Varsity Invitational track meet Monday at Riverside Park.

Iola High’s Mustang junior varsity won four events at the annual Iola High Junior Varsity Invitational track meet Monday at Riverside Park.
Along with junior varsities from Iola, Chanute, Labette County, Parsons, Coffeyville, Girard and Anderson County, there was a mixture of varsity and junior varsity athletes from Humboldt, Marmaton Valley, Crest, Pleasanton, West Elk and Altoona-Midway.
The Mustangs went 1-2-4 in the 800-meter run, led by Eli Johns with a winning time of 2 minutes, 18.12 seconds. Seth Kristalyn was second in 2:20.29 and Kyle Carswell placed fourth in 2:22.86.
Roman Yocham won the 1600-meter run in 5:00.46. Carswell was sixth in 5:13 and Kristalyn placed seventh in 5:17.
With a strong surge at the end by anchor Christian Kauth, Iola won the 4x800-meter relay race in 9:03.58. The Mustangs edged out Humboldt, which was second in 9:04.53. Crest was third in 9:34.99.
Yocham, Aaron Cheung and Johns combined with Kauth for the win. Johns and Kauth joined Mikal Bossell and Adam Morrell to place fourth in the 4x400-meter relay race in 3:59.08. Morrell, Kauth, Denton Christian and Drew Shepherd gave Iola a sixth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay in 50.39 seconds.
Bossell took fifth in the 400-meter dash in 58.32 seconds. Morrell placed eighth in the 200-meter dash in 26.25 seconds.
In the field events, the Mustangs got a first-place performance from Shepherd. He won the pole vault at 9 feet, 6 inches. Dylan Lower took third at 8 feet. Shepherd also placed in a tie for sixth in the high jump at 5 feet.
Kyle Heffern took second in the discus with a throw of 108’9”. Josh Butler placed fourth in the shot put at 39’1”.
Kauth was third in the triple jump with a leap of 36’2”.
In the javelin, Dylan Allen took third with a distance of 138’4” while Kyle Heffern was fourth at 138’1” and Ralph Shafer was fifth at 134’5”.
Results for other area schools:

Marmaton Valley

Kurtis LaRue won the long jump with a leap of 19’7”. He took second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.84 seconds and fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 44.61 seconds.
Zach Louk was fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5’2”.
The Wildcat 4x100-meter relay team of Landon Hammond, Mikael Hatfield, La-Rue and Shawn Storrer was fifth in 49.28 seconds. Marmaton Valley’s 4x400-meter relay team was seventh in 4:18.7.
Louk was fourth in the 3200-meter run in 11:28.53 and fifth in the 1600-meter run in 5:12.94. Storrer took fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:31.07.

Humboldt

Andy Hill won the 3200-meter run in 11:09.37 and was second in the 1600-meter run in 5:03.82. Hill also was fifth in the high jump at 5’2”.
Scott Sollars won the triple jump with a leap of 39’7”. Sollars also won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 43.28 seconds with teammate Chris Winner in third at 44.42. Reece Criger placed seventh in the race in 50.44.
Devin Onnen placed second in the shot put with a toss of 41’6” and Rusty Olson was seventh at 36’6”. Onnen was second in the javelin with a distance of 139’6”.
Josh Jay finished in a tie for sixth in the 100-meter dash in 12.39 seconds. Kevin Barker was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 25.69 seconds and fourth in the 400-meter dash in 56.44 seconds.
Humboldt won the 4x400-meter relay race in 3:04.81. The Cubs were fourth in the 4x100-meter relay in 48.72 and second in the 4x800-meter relay race.

Crest

Dakota Ramsey took first in the javelin with a throw of 146’4”. Thomas Dietrich was eighth at 121’1”.
Ramsey placed third in the discus, 105’7”, and Jake Tinsley was fifth, 103’8”. C.J. Cole placed eighth in the shot put at 36’11⁄2”.
Micah Smith ran second in the 100-meter dash in 12.09 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash in 25.44 seconds. Dustin Davis-Jones was second in the 3200-meter run in 11:13.42 and Trevor Holman took fifth in the race in 11:57.29.
Crest’s 4x800-meter relay was third. It’s 4x400-meter relay team was fifth in 4:04.81.
