MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s girls won the battle of the Wildcats Monday in 2009 Kansas Class 2-1A Regional Softball Tournament play.
Hosting a first-round game, Marmaton Valley was able to hold off a late charge by Yates Center High’s girls, winning 9-7. Marmaton Valley travels to Humboldt today for the semifinal round.
Marmaton Valley (3-13) faces top-seeded Humboldt (18-1) at 3 o’clock on Humboldt’s Manion Field. The 4:45 semifinal pits Uniontown (8-6) against Altoona-Midway (8-4).
The Class 2-1A regional championship game is at 6:30.
“It was a good all around team effort for us,” said Brenda Mills, Marmaton Valley head coach. “Those who played in the game did a good job and the players on the bench were very supportive.”
It was 1-1 after two innings. Yates Center scored a run in the top of the third but Marmaton Valley countered with two runs in its half of the inning. In the fourth, Yates Center scored one and Marmaton Valley pushed across three to take a 6-3 lead.
Marmaton Valley added two more in the fifth inning. Yates Center produced three runs in the top of the sixth to make it 8-6. Marmaton Valley scored a run in the sixth then held Yates Center to just a run in the top of the seventh for the win.
Maggie Meiwes was the winning pitcher giving up seven hits and striking out three. Daryean Estes pitched for Yates Center.
Jamee McEndree had a triple and a home run for Marmaton Valley and Shelby Norman hit two doubles. Hitting two singles each were Sydney Hale, Meiwes and Cheyanne Miller. Kayla McNutt and Michelle Heskett each doubled.
There were no Yates center individual statistics reported to the Register.
