Marmaton Valley High opens baseball season

RICHMOND — Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats weren’t able to hold back the tide against host Central Heights High’s Vikings Friday.
After tying the first game up 2-2 in the top of the fifth, the Wildcats gave up five runs to the Vikings. Central Heights went on to win 11-2.
In the second game, the Vikings built on a 2-0 lead in the second inning to claim a 10-0 win over Marmaton Valley. The Wildcats opened the 2009 baseball season a day later than scheduled and with a 0-2 mark.
“I was pleased with our effort and pitching,” said Derek Scharff, Wildcat head coach. “We found out what we need to work on — our fielding and hitting. We kept both games close with pitching but could never get any bats going.”
Garret Ericson pitched the first game, going 4 2/3 innings. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and one walk, hit a batter and struck out two. Derrick Carr pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks and striking out one.
Connecting for a single each were Ben Biggs, Ethan Ericson, Garret Ericson and Jared Maley.
Ethan Ericson was the losing pitcher in the second game. He worked five innings surrendering seven runs on eight hits, one walk and two hit batters. He struck out four. Logan Booth pitched one inning and gave up four runs on five hits and one walk.
Tom Stinnett, Biggs and Ethan Ericson each singled.
