MV Wildcats claim victory

MORAN — Taking advantage of a 13-hit attack offensively, Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats snagged their first win of the 2009 baseball season.
Playing at home Monday, the Wildcats defeated St. Paul High’s Indians 11-6 in the first of two games. The Wildcats used a five-run third inning to go up 6-0.
Marmaton Valley led 8-4 after five innings and added three more runs in the sixth.
Garret Ericson was the winning pitcher. He worked 5 1/3 innings giving up six runs on 10 hits and three walks. He struck out seven.
Ethan Ericson pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed two hits and struck out four.
Tom Stinnett led the offense with a single and a double. Hitting two singles each were Ben Biggs, Ethan Ericson, Logan Booth and Gage Stewart. Tanner Lewis, Jared Maley and Randall Kuns each had a base hit.
The Wildcats lost the second game 4-1 with Ethan Ericson on the mound. He gave up six hits, walked four and struck out eight.
Marmaton Valley only had two hits in the game. Biggs doubled and Stinnett singled.
“Our pitching was very good again,” said Derek Scharff, Wildcat head coach. “We pitched good enough to win both games.”
Scharff said the Wildcats gave up too many runs because of fielding errors. They also left too many people in scoring position.
“Our bats were much better in the first game and went cold in the second game,” he said. “It is still early and we saw some good things in these two games. We need to keep improving each and every game.”
Marmaton Valley is now 1-1 in Three Rivers League play with the split with St. Paul. The Wildcats are 1-3 on the season.
Marmaton Valley goes to Frontenac on Thursday.
