UNIONTOWN — Marmaton Valley Junior High’s B-team came from behind to claim a 22-21 win over tournament host Uniontown Junior High Thursday.
The victory handed the tournament’s B-team division championship to the Wildcats. The Wildcats trailed 12-4 at halftime and were down 16-14 going into the fourth quarter.
“It was a team effort. It was a very exciting game,” said Brenda Mills, MVJH head coach. “This was the first year we allowed sixth grade girls to play basketball so it would give us enough players to have an A and B team for the tournament.”
Marmaton Valley hit 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. Sam Root, who was 5 of 6, tied the game with two charities then had the go-ahead point from the free-throw line.
Sam Root led the Wildcats with nine points with Mackenzie Tynon tossing in eight points. Tanna Lutz and Mariah Root each had two points and Emily Boyd scored one point. Boyd and Tynon hit free throws down the stretch.
In the A-team division, Marmaton Valley’s team lost 26-21 to Westphalia in the third-place game. Marmaton Valley trailed 23-11 after three quarters.
“In the first half we couldn’t get anything going,” Mills said. “We out played and outscored them in the second half but were too far down to catch up.”
Kaitlin Ensminger had 10 points for Marmaton Valley. Hannah Endicott scored six points and Ashtynn Louk had five.
