FORT SCOTT — Keli Lee and LeeRoi Johnson of the Iola Swim Team captured an event championship at the 2009 SEK Swim League Championships Saturday.
Hosting team Fort Scott racked up its eighth straight SEK Swim League team title, winning by 1,000 points over second-place Chanute.
Independence was third and Coffeyville took fourth.
Iola’s Seahorses ranked up 1,157 points to claim fifth in the eight-team league. Erie was sixth followed by Cherryvale and Humboldt.
The morning session of Saturday’s championship was interrupted just seven events into the start by a long break. A thunderstorm complete with lightning and rain rolled through the area delaying the swim meet and putting everything behind schedule.
Johnson is the SEK 7-8-year-old boys’ 25-yard freestyle champion. He won the race in 16.99 seconds.
Johnson took second in the 25-yard butterfly and in the 25-yard backstroke. He placed third in the 10-and-under boys’ 50-yard freestyle.
That came in the morning session when the 10-and-under swimmers competed. Iola had outstanding performances by several swimmers in the younger set.
Danielle Donnell had a strong showing in the 9-10-year-old girls’ division. She took third in the 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle race, third in the 25-yard butterfly and third in the 100-yard individual medley. Plus she had two seventh-place finishes in the breaststroke and freestyle races.
Della Lohman joined Donnell in the top 10 with eighth-place finishes in the butterfly and backstroke. Donnell was 10th in the backstroke.
In the 6-and-under division, Guiseppe Mangrella finished in the top 10 in all four stroke races — butterfly, back, breast and freestyle. As did Ashley Donnell in the 7-and-8-year-old girls’ division.
Iola had swimmers scoring points in both the morning and afternoon session. The top 16 places score points in each race.
Lee went into the league meet with the top time in the 13-14-year-old girls’ butterfly. She showed why she flew through the water in the 50-yard race taking first in 32.66 seconds.
Lee was second in the 100-yard freestyle race just before that. She placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke and freestyle and 10th in the 50-yard breaststroke before finishing the day with a second-place swim in the 100-yard individual medley relay.
Michelle Britt had top 10 finishes in the 15-18-year-old girls’ division for Iola. She was 10th in the 200-yard freestyle, ninth in the 100-yard freestyle and ninth in the 50-yard backstroke.
Michael Wilson and Jordan Strickler went 4-5 in the 13-14-year-old boys’ 100-yd freestyle race. Andrew Lowell was 14th. The trio went 6-8-11 in the 50-yard butterfly led by Strickler then Wilson and Lowell.
In the 50-yard backstroke, Strickler was sixth, Wilson seventh and Lowell ninth. And in the 50-yard breaststroke, Strickler was fourth and Wilson fifth then in the 100-yard individual medley relay, Strickler took fourth and Wilson sixth.
In the 11-12-year-old division, Brandon Donnell and Emma Piazza led the way for Iola. Donnell earned top 10 finishes in six races and Piazza in five races. They both took third in the 100-yard individual medley races with Tyler Holloway placing ninth in the boys’ race.
Iola had two swimmers ending their careers at the 2009 league meet — seniors Morgan Buchholz and Alex Piazza. Alex Piazza took sixth in the 15-18-year-old boys’ 50-yard butterfly race.
Iola will host the 2010 SEK Swim League Championships.
