Crest High’s Bryan Newton (32) slices through the Chetopa High defense Friday behind the blocking of teammate Micah Smith (center) Friday. Newton rushed for 165 yards in the Lancers’ 63-14 win.

COLONY — Friday night had plenty of elements to please Crest High head coach Brent Smith.
Some nifty runs. Precision passing. Powerful and effective blocking.
And hitting. Lots of hitting.
The Lancers laid the proverbial wood to visiting Chetopa High to the tune of a 63-14 win in Crest’s home-opener.
The victory keeps Crest’s record spotless at 2-0.
“I thought our boys did a great job of getting off the line and they did a good job of tackling,” Smith said.
And on several occasions, Crest’s defenders sent Chetopa’s backs and receivers sprawling from crunching hits.
The Lancers strung together several methodical drives throughout the first half to seize control.
Crest scored 25 points in the first quarter and 24 in the second, despite not gaining more than 21 yards in a single play.
Freshman quarterback Kyle Hammond scored on runs of six, one and three yards while tossing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Zach Stinnett.
Micah Smith also had three touchdown runs, two of which went for three yards, the third going 10.
Bryan Newton scored twice on runs of one and six yards, part of a 165-yard rushing evening.
Crest racked up 320 yards on the ground, evidence of the team’s effective blocking.
There were a few notable blemishes.
Twice, Chetopa runners broke through the line of scrimmage to see no defenders between them and the end zone. The Hornets’ Judd Noble scored on a 50-yard run late in the first quarter, and Justice Riddle scored on a 53-yard run in the second quarter.
“Take away those two plays and we would have had a really strong game,” Smith said.
And for the second straight game, the Lancers have shown an innate inability to score extra points. “It boils down to execution,” Smith said.
Hammond connected on 3 of 4 passes for 45 yards and rushed 8 times for 33. Dakota Ramsey added 87 yards on 10 carries and Smith had eight rushes for 33. Stinnett had a 21-yard receptoin, while Dexter Wiley and Newton each had one reception for 10 and 11 yards, respectively.
Smith led Crest with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Jayden Bowen and Thomas Dietrich had seven and six stops. Ramsey and Hammond each had five tackles. Ramsey, Byran Miller, Dietrich and Bowen each registered a quarterback sack.
Crest looks to keep its record spotless next Friday at Amoret, Mo., when they play Miami R-1.
