Crest High’s Brandon Newton (21) goes in for a layup in a home game earlier this season. Newton’s 28-point performance guided the Lancers to a 67-30 Class 1A substate semifinal win over Norwich Friday.

EL DORADO — Feeling quite at home on the Butler Community College basketball court, Crest High’s Lancers were too much for the Norwich High Eagles to handle Friday night.
On the same court they won a Kansas Class 1A Substate Tournament championship a year ago, the Lancers flexed their top-ranked muscles for a 67-30 win in substate semifinal play.
Tonight, the Lancers (24-0) take on Madison (16-8) at 7:30 in the BCC gym for a 2009 Class 1A substate title and a berth to the Kansas Class 1A State Basketball Tournament in Hays next week.
Madison upended Burrton 64-57 Friday.
“Madison is a very physical team,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest head coach.
“Even though we played a little tight at the start of the game, we felt we were in complete control of the first half. But we were just up by 15.”
Senior forward Brandon Newton powered the Lancers with a double -double, scoring 28 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. He scored 18 points in the first half.
The Lancers pushed out to an 11-2 lead early and were up 21-7 by the end of the first quarter. They did have some foul trouble pop up early but weathered it.
Norwich was able to slow down Crest for awhile in the second quarter. The Eagles limited the Lancers to 12 points but only scored 11 of their own.
Crest owned a 33-18 halftime lead. The Lancers came out and dominated the entire second half.
“I was very pleased with the way we buttoned downed the screws on defense in the second half,” Hermreck said.
Crest outscored Norwich (10-14) 18-6 in the third quarter. It’s lead ballooned to 67-28 about midway through the fourth quarter.
Todd Johnston fired in 20 points for the Lancers.
“We got our transition game going. The kids came out relaxed and played well in the second half,” Hermreck said.
