Marmaton Valley High’s Logan Booth (42) carries the football against Crest High’s Lancers in Three Rivers League eight-man football game Friday at Moran.

MORAN — In a battle of old rivals, visiting Crest High took advantage of several early opportunities Friday to seize control over host Marmaton Valley High.
The Lancers blasted their way to a 40-0 lead into the second quarter. Marmaton Valley didn’t go down without a fight, but it was not enough as Crest picked up a 58-36 win.
The victory keeps the Lancers’ record spotless at 6-0 and sealed the team’s second consecutive Three Rivers League title. More importantly, it pushes Crest’s record to 2-0 in Eight Man Division I, District 2 play. Marmaton Valley falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in districts.
“The 24-point first quarter made all the difference,” Wildcat head coach Dan Uhlrich said. “Take away that quarter, and we were able to play with them.”
The Lancers asserted full control in the first half. Bryan Newton returned a punt 69 yards to the Wildcat one-yard line to set up Crest’s first touchdown on the next play, a run by Micah Smith.
Dexter Wiley ended Marmaton Valley’s next possession with an interception, which he ran back to the Wildcat 24-yard line. Two plays later, Crest’s Kyle Hammond ran in a one-yard keeper.
Even Crest’s bad fortunes in the first quarter were temporary. Hammond found Newton on a nifty screen pass that Newton took deep into Marmaton Valley territory before Newton fumbled into the end zone.
But before the Wildcats could recover, Newton jumped back on the ball for another touchdown.
The Lancers led 24-0 without a snap on their side of the 40-yard line.
Marmaton Valley threatened early in the second period on a hook-and-lateral play, but Crest’s defense withstood an first-and-goal to snuff the drive four plays later.
Hammond connected on a pair of pass plays, one to Byran Miller, the other to Newton to push the lead to 40-0.
Marmaton Valley’s first score came on a fumble recovery, when a pass to Skylark Houk was fumbled. But teammate Kurtis LaRue picked up the ball and rambled the rest of the way into the end zone.
“We started out quickly, and the guys played well,” Crest head coach Brent Smith said. “You never know what’s going to happen when these two teams play. Give Marmaton Valley credit. We knew they weren’t going to quit. Coach Uhlrich does a good job with those boys.”
Ethan Ericson found his groove from the second quarter on, completing touchdown passes of 40 yards to Tanner Lewis and 20 yards to Landon Hammond. Ericson also ran in two touchdowns for the Wildcats.
“We just shot ourselves in the foot early on,” Uhlrich said. “I thought we got better as the game went on and figured out what we were doing.”
Newton racked up 210 rushing yards for the Lancers and 75 more through the air, four four touchdowns in all. K. Hammond, meanwhile, rushed for 77 yards and completed 6 of 11 passes for 145 yards. K. Hammond also had 15tackles on defense, followed by M. Smith and Dakota Ramsey with nine apiece. Zach Stinnett and Newton had seven stops each. Stinnett also recovered a pair of fumbles, Wiley and Ramsey pulled in interceptions and Jordan Morton recovered a fumble.
Ericson completed 11 of 30 passes for 198 yards for Marmaton Valley, while Daylen Houk had 35 yards on nine carries.
Lewis had 78 yard s on four receptions. L. Hammond had a 36-yard catch. On defense, Lewis and S. Houk each had nine tackles for the Wildcats.
Crest hosts Madison High next Friday. Marmaton Valley travels to Southern Coffey County.
