EUREKA — Three of the 15 medals awarded in Tuesday’s varsity boys cross country race went to area runners. Crest, Yates Center and Humboldt cross country teams competed in Eureka High’s invitational meet.
Crest High’s Dustin Davis-Jones ran the varsity 5K race in 18 minutes, 9.8 seconds to collect the sixth-place medal. Yates Center High’s Dylan Sicka finished seventh in 19:18.
Crest’s Trevor Holman earned the 15th medal by edging out Yates Center’s Paul Stockebrand. Holman’s time was 18:48.4 and Stockebrand’s was 18:48.8.
“Our top two runners continue to run hard but most importantly our 4-6 runners (who run in junior varsity) are cutting off significant time each week,” said Tisha Hug, Crest cross country coach.
“We need them to continue to do that as we head into league and regionals.”
Yates Center cross country coach Kevin Barnes said Sicka had a nice lead halfway through the race then experienced problems. Sicka finished the race in pain.
“Paul looked great through the first half of the race then dropped back,” Barnes said.
Humboldt High’s Cody Wright finished 30th in 19:56. Reece Criger was 40th in 20:33.
The only area girls to compete in the meet were from Yates Center.
Cherokee Shaffer placed 36th in the varsity girls’ 4K race in 22:00.1. Chari Dyer ran a strong race to earn the seventh-place medal in the junior varsity race in 21:45.
In the junior varsity boys race, Humboldt’s Jacob Jones earned the third-place medal in 20:27 with Crest’s Chris Brallier in fourth at 20:44.
Others placing for Crest were: 11. David Womelsdorf, 21:32; 15. Jory Ramsey, 22:06; 18. Cole Bowen, 22:42.
Others placing for Humboldt were: 12. Nick Keazer, 21:34; 19. Jackson Smith, 23:13; 21. Dylan Greve, 23:31; 23. Chris Headley, 23:38.9; 29. Brett Heslop, 30:36.6.
