Lancers too much for Eagles to handle

COLONY — The beginning of Friday’s contest wasn’t to Crest High head coach Travis Hermreck’s liking.
“We were a little sloppy defensively,” Hermreck said. “We made a lot of mistakes.”
They settled things decisively from there, outscoring visiting Uniontown 50-24 over the final three quarters of a 62-32 win.
The victory wraps up a perfect regular season for the Lancers at 20-0. Crest, the top seed in the Class 1A Regional Playoffs, have a first-round bye. They’ll take on the winner of Tuesday’s Altoona-Midway-St. Paul matchup next Friday.
The final two rounds of the regional will be at Allen County Community College in Iola.
“I feel good about where we are,” Hermreck said. “The guys have made some good improvement through the season.”
More importantly was Crest’s sense of perspective on what Hermreck hopes is a special postseason.
“These kids have been wonderful. They’ve done everything I’ve asked. They’ve stayed focused on taking things one game at a time,” he said. “Our goal was to keep everybody focused until the postseason arrived. Now it’s here.”
Crest (7-0 in Three Rivers League) led 12-8 after one period, then extended the cushion to 34-20 by the break. The lead ballooned to 50-30 after three quarters. The Lancers ended the contest with a 12-2 run.
Brandon Newton scored a game-high 21 points to lead Crest. Zach Stinnett and Bryan Newton followed with 15 points apiece. Todd Johnston scored nine.
Drew Johnson led the Eagles with nine points.
The Eagles (8-10 overall and 3-4 in TRL) travel to Pomona Tuesday in regular season play.
