Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans showed why they are now 21-2 for the season.
The Lady Titans just wore down the St. Paul High Indians here Saturday.
The Indians had come into the Kansas Class 1A Regional tournament championship game with revenge on their minds. Southern Coffey County rallied from 10 points down, forced an overtime and beat St. Paul in the extra period earlier this season.
This game, the Lady Titans pulled away in the second half. They built a seven-point halftime lead and won 51-37.
Southern Coffey County and St. Paul advance to Class 1A substate action this week.
Southern Coffey County (21-2) plays Waverly (13-10) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the substate at Emporia. St. Paul (19-4) takes on Madison (17-6) at 6 p.m. at El Dorado.
“We’re seeing the maturity of this team starting to show. Our girls pride themselves in being in very good condition and it shows,” said Jeff True, Lady Titan head coach.
“Today, they played to win. That’s all I really told them at halftime — to go out and play to win. A lot of teams will play not to lose but our girls came out and kept working hard and attacking in the second half.”
St. Paul broke out to a 6-2 lead, led by Morgan Westhoff. Southern Coffey County’s Kaitlin Meyer started to assert herself inside. She drew a foul and hit two free throws.
The Lady Titans tied the game on a basket by Shelby Birk. St. Paul regained the lead on a three-point play by Kennedee Borum at the 3:22 mark.
Birk scored again for Southern Coffey County. Although Kristin Stephens missed two free throws a few seconds later, she had drawn a foul. It was St. Paul’s Madi Borum’s second; Westhoff picked up her second five seconds later.
Ashton Gudenkauf came off the Lady Titan bench and hit a basket just before the buzzer. That gave Southern Coffey County a 10-9 lead.
Westhoff hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter for St. Paul. Laurie Ohl, the Lady Titans’ other inside player, went to work. She had two putbacks and another basket leading her team to a 16-12 lead with 5:34 left.
Southern Coffey County led 18-12 when Westhoff nailed another trey and M Borum scored. Up by one, Southern Coffey County hit three free throws and Kristen Garland drilled a three to give the Lady Titans a 24-17 halftime advantage.
The game stayed close most the of the third quarter. It was 28-26 when Southern Coffey County’s inside game took hold again.
Stephens had a follow shot then Ohl had back-to-back baskets. Meyer stole the basketball and scored on a layup.
Meyer scored in transition again with 30 seconds left. Stephens hit a free throw to make it 39-26.
St. Paul’s Madi Borum kept her team in the game. She scored eight points in an 11-1 run to get within seven again, 44-37, with 4:02 left.
It came down to free throws.
“I talked to our players about confidence during the timeouts. Free throw shooting is all about confidence,” True said.
“And yes, our defense fuels our offense. We played better in the final four minutes than in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter.”
The Lady Titans hit 5 of 6 free throws and Meyer scored inside. Their defense denied St. Paul any more points as Westhoff and M. Borum both had fouled out of the game.
Ohl paced the Lady Titans with 17 points, Meyer had 14. The Lady Titans cashed in on 18 of 33 free throw attempts.
M. Borum and K. Borum each scored 12 points for St. Paul. Westhoff had 10 points. The Indians were 2 of 5 at the free-throw line.
