EMPORIA — Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans return to the Kansas Class 1A Substate Tournament championship game. They are looking for a better result than last year.
The Lady Titans used a 21-10 run in the second quarter Thursday night to oust Waverly High’s Lady Bulldogs in a substate semifinal game. They beat the Lady Bulldogs 60-41 at Emporia’s White Auditorium.
“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, especially early in the game,” said Jeff True, Southern Coffey County head coach. “Our defense again was a big key.
“We did a good job challenging shots and rebounding.”
It was the three-point shooting of Kristen Garland and Shelby Birk that ignited the Lady Titans. Garland hit three of her four treys in the second quarter and Birk drained one of her three.
Southern Coffey County led 11-8 going into the second period. By halftime, the Lady Titans were up 32-18. They maintained their edge throughout the second half.
Garland ended up with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kaitlin Meyer scored 12 points and dished out four assists.
Laurie Ohl grabbed seven rebounds. Birk had four steals and five assists.
The Lady Titans were 22 of 63, 35 percent, from the field. They were 9 of 13 at the free-throw line.
Brenna Wilson had 19 points and Paige Meader added 10 for Waverly.
The Lady Titans take on Hutchinson Central Christian in the final at 6 p.m. Saturday in Emporia. Central Christian beat South Haven 46-38 Thursday.
